In this episode we’ll be taking a closer look at the different metabolic energy pathways in the human body and how they affect our ability to exercise and perform physical activities.
Three metabolic pathways generate the energy required to perform an
exercise:
The phosphagen metabolic energy pathway
When we kick off a burst of intense activity, such as sprinting or powerlifting, our muscles call upon the phosphagen metabolic energy pathway for a rapid energy boost. This pathway relies on stored creatine phosphate to swiftly produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of our cells, providing a quick surge of power to fuel our initial efforts.
The glycolytic metabolic energy pathway
As our physical efforts transition from short bursts to sustained activity, the glycolytic pathway steps up to the plate. During this process, stored glucose or glycogen is broken down through glycolysis, producing ATP to support moderate to high-intensity workouts. This metabolic energy pathway serves as a crucial intermediary, bridging the quick bursts of the phosphagen pathway with the sustained endurance of the oxidative pathway.
The oxidative metabolic energy pathway
For prolonged and steady activities, like long-distance running or cycling, the oxidative pathway takes center stage. This pathway, also known as aerobic metabolic energy pathway, harnesses the power of oxygen to break down carbohydrates, fats, and even proteins to continually produce ATP. By continuously supplying a steady stream of energy, the oxidative pathway is the driving force behind endurance and stamina during exercise.
