Consistency for Sustainable Wellbeing

When it comes to creating a sustainable, healthy lifestyle consistency is key. It’s the actions you take MOST of the time that creates lasting results. But you probably know this, right?

So, what’s holding you back? What’s creating friction?

If there’s one thing that has truly been a game-changer for me in reaching my health and life goals, it’s consistency. The ability to show up day in and day out, making small strides towards a better version of myself, has been more impactful than any grand gesture or fleeting motivation. But, as I’ve observed in my clients, the biggest hurdle they face is the struggle to stay consistent.

Overcome Perfection

One major culprit that often stands in the way of consistency is perfectionism. The relentless pursuit of perfection can create unnecessary friction, leading us to fixate on minor details and draining our willpower in the process. I recently had a conversation with a client who was grappling with balancing his work and personal life due to his perfectionist tendencies. He found himself constantly checking and crafting emails late into the night, disrupting his sleep and overall well-being.

In moments like these, no new productivity method or app can truly address the root issue of perfectionism. As marketing guru Seth Godin aptly puts it, sometimes it’s about embracing imperfection and showing up with your “bad” efforts. Whether it’s a subpar workout, a quick walk, or a simple home-cooked meal, it’s important to shift our focus from perfection to consistency.

Focus On The Process

Consistency, after all, is a mindset. It’s about committing to the process and showing up for yourself each day, even on days when progress seems minimal. By choosing consistency over perfection, we’re choosing self-love and kindness. It’s about setting realistic expectations, understanding that progress is not always linear, and being gentle with ourselves along the way.

One common pitfall I’ve encountered, both in my own journey and with clients, is fixating too much on the end result rather than the journey itself. While goals are important, getting too caught up in immediate outcomes can derail our long-term progress. The drive for instant gratification often leads to setting unrealistic goals and, subsequently, feeling disheartened when results don’t materialize overnight.

In a world that thrives on quick fixes and instant results, it’s crucial to shift our focus to the journey, the process. Just as my slow runs eventually led to significant progress over time, it’s the daily commitment and small steps forward that truly add up in the long run. So, instead of getting discouraged by the pace or fixating on the end goal, focus on the present moment, on the next step ahead of you.

Remember, it’s okay to have off days, to take breaks, and to acknowledge that progress is not always linear. Celebrate the small victories, the incremental improvements, and understand that consistency, not perfection, is the true key to reaching your goals. So, show up imperfectly, embrace the process, and trust that small steps taken consistently will lead you closer to where you want to be.
